Headaches are one of the most common complaints people have in our culture. Although headaches may be seemingly simple in principle, there are a lot of intricacies behind what caused your headache. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there can be at least 5 varying causes to headaches. It may be internal causes, such as emotional stress or a physical ailment.  Alternatively, it may also have an external cause like loud noises, temperature change or other environmental factors.  And of course, it could be a combination of the two that is giving you a headache.

Different Types of Headaches

Ever notice your headaches happen in specific areas of the head? Front? Back? Temple-Side of the Face? Top of the head? Inside it?

All these regions connect with different meridians. Each of these meridians has a different flow of energy. Generally, the cause of headaches can be simplified into two main reasons or a combination of the two. 1) the energy or “qi” in the meridians not flowing in their proper direction. 2) there is a traffic jam of qi in the channel causing a damming effect, which can be felt as tension or pain.

When Qi flows in the wrong direction in your Meridian

In this case, the energy is “rebelling” and reversing the flow. For example, the Stomach Meridian is correlated with frontal & sinus headaches. The flow of this channel is from the face down to the feet. A reversal of the energy means it would be going upward, hence the feeling of discomfort.

In cases of temple headaches, it is correlated with the Gallbladder channel. The channel directly touches into the temple area and travels in the downward direction.  When people get stressed & feel pressured, the Liver’s function is to release the tension and keep things flowing. However, when this function is compromised the energy stagnates which then keeps building up.

There more headaches?

Yes, there a few more headaches. The meridians generally associated with the headaches are:

  • Frontal = Stomach Channel
  • Temple = Gallbladder Channel
  • Back of neck = Urinary bladder Channel
  • Top of head, inside, or behind eyes= Liver Channels

All these channels have a certain flow & function. The cause of pain, tension or imbalance is highly unique to the individual.
