TCM View of Stress
In Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture, stress is something that is corresponded to the element Yin Wood & affiliated physically with the Liver. Yin wood represents the flexibility of wood element & being able to bend.
What does the Liver do?
The Liver in TCM is in charge of smooth flow of Qi (energy) and storing the blood. It is said that Qi and blood always interact and work together. If one of them is off, it will influence the other.
Emotional Impact on the Qi
The Liver rules over the emotion of Anger when its negative. However, on the positive spectrum it also is in charge of decision making, strategy & compassion.
Tying it all together
Understanding the above, we can say that stress is a lesser form of Anger or pent of Qi not being expressed. The results of stress then makes the Qi more constricted and less flowy. This then becomes a negative cycle of becoming a pressure cooker. Less flow of Qi, more pent up emotions, repeat. This cycle keeps happening until the valve is released incrementally or blows the lid off suddenly (anger).
Flow and Cycle
In Acupuncture, the goal when someone is stressed is to help regulate, flow & circulate their energy. An analogy to help understand this is a river. When a river is slow moving, things may get stuck in it causing the flow to be slower. When the water level increases, the flow becomes faster to the congestion naturally moves away.
Stress Management with TCM
Acupuncture was just one of the many tools used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to help manage and relieve pent up Qi & emotions. There are many other modalities such as visualizations, breathing, meditation, Qigong & Taichi are all great ways to help achieve stress relief.
